Arabica Coffee: Why Global Buyers Are Turning to the Da Lat Highlands

When most people think of Vietnamese coffee, they think Robusta — bold, bitter, and cheap. But there's a quieter story unfolding in the highlands of Da Lat, where small-scale farmers are producing Arabica beans that are turning heads in specialty coffee markets from Tokyo to Amsterdam.

What makes Da Lat Arabica different?

Sitting at 1,500 metres above sea level, Da Lat's cool temperatures and rich volcanic soil create ideal conditions for slow-ripening Arabica cherries. The result is a cup profile that's noticeably different from its Southeast Asian neighbours — bright acidity, floral notes, and a clean finish that holds up well in both espresso and filter brewing.

The sourcing opportunity

Most Da Lat farms are small — under 5 hectares — which means they rarely have the export infrastructure to reach international buyers directly. This is where working with a local sourcing partner makes the difference. A good partner on the ground can consolidate supply from multiple farms, ensure consistent processing standards, and handle the export documentation that small farmers simply don't have the capacity for.

What to look for when buying

When sourcing Vietnamese Arabica, ask about processing method (washed vs. natural vs. honey), altitude, and harvest season. The main harvest runs from October to January. Certifications like Organic or Rainforest Alliance are available from select farms and can add significant value for buyers targeting premium retail markets.

Minimum order quantities typically start from 50kg for sample orders, with commercial quantities from 500kg upward.
