If you have ten days, central Vietnam is where the trip slows down in the best way. Hanoi gives you the capital, Hue gives you the imperial history, and Hoi An gives you tailors, beaches and long café afternoons. One short flight keeps the route simple.

Best time to go: February to May is the sweet spot: dry, warm and not yet scorching. From September to December the central coast gets the most rain and sometimes flooding in Hoi An, so keep your plans flexible.

Days 1-3: Hanoi

Spend three days in Hanoi. Day one is the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake; day two is the Temple of Literature, the Mausoleum area and a food tour; day three is a day trip to Ninh Binh for boat rides through the limestone caves, or a Ha Long Bay day cruise if you prefer the sea.

Days 4-5: Fly to Hue

Take a morning flight to Hue (about 1 hour 20 minutes). Visit the Imperial Citadel in the afternoon and the royal tombs on day five, ideally with a rented bike or a driver. Try bun bo Hue, the local spicy beef noodle soup, at least once.

Day 6: Hue to Hoi An by the Hai Van Pass

Hire a driver for the scenic coastal road over the Hai Van Pass (3 to 4 hours with stops). Stop for views at the top, and have a seafood lunch at Lang Co or Da Nang before arriving in Hoi An in the afternoon.

Days 7-9: Hoi An

Hoi An is best explored in the early morning and evening when the tour groups are gone. Spend a day in the Old Town and a day at An Bang or Cua Dai beach, and book one cooking class. For a half-day trip, visit My Son Sanctuary at dawn to beat the heat. If you want tailor-made clothes, order on the first day so there is time for fittings.

Day 10: Da Nang and fly home

Hoi An to Da Nang airport takes about 45 minutes by car. If you have a few hours spare, visit the Marble Mountains or Marble beach strip on your way.

Practical tips

  • Domestic flights are cheapest booked well in advance, and the Hanoi to Hue leg is short enough to take hand luggage only.
  • Hoi An Old Town has used an entry ticket for its heritage sites. Check the current rule before you go and keep the ticket with you if it applies.
  • The Lantern Festival on full-moon nights is lovely but crowded.
  • Rain gear is useful at any time of year on the central coast.
