Cat Ba Overview

Cat Ba is the largest island in the Ha Long Bay archipelago, with jungle hills, small beaches and access to quieter Lan Ha Bay. It suits active travelers, couples and budget cruisers who want fewer crowds than Ha Long City.

Highlights of Cat Ba:

  • Lan Ha Bay boat and kayak: Book a half- or full-day trip with kayaking and swimming a day ahead.
  • Cat Ba National Park: Hike to a viewpoint in about 1 hour. Wear shoes with good grip.
  • Cat Co beaches: Small beaches near the town. They are crowded in summer.
  • Seafood: Eat at harbor restaurants. Check the price by weight before ordering.

Best Time to Visit: Sep – Nov brings clear skies, warm water and fewer crowds. Jul – Sep typhoon warnings can cancel boats; Dec – Feb is cold and hazy. Summer weekends are crowded.

Book your bus-plus-ferry ticket and boat tours a day ahead; summer weekend seats sell out.
