Getting to Sapa

Times, costs and booking links.

Step 1: Fly to Hanoi (HAN) Land here, then head into central Hanoi

Noi Bai Airport is about 35km north of central Hanoi. Off-peak the drive takes about 40 min; at rush hour allow up to 1.5 hrs. There is no metro to the airport.

  • Best option: GrabCar or Xanh SM: fixed in-app fares of about 200,000 – 350,000 VND ($8 – $14) to the Old Quarter. A metered Mai Linh taxi costs about 300,000 – 400,000 VND ($12 – $16).
  • Bus: Express bus 86 costs about 45,000 VND ($1.80) and takes 45 – 60 min to the Hanoi Railway Station area. Bus 7 costs about 8,000 VND but takes 60 – 90 min.
  • Scam tip: Use the app or a branded metered taxi. Avoid unbranded cars and touts, and keep your address saved in Vietnamese.
Step 2: Limousine to Sapa Expressway vans in 5.5 – 6 hrs, or an overnight train

The limousine van via the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway is the default. The overnight train is the classic alternative.

  • Limousine van: About 5.5 – 6 hrs and $13 – $18. Vans run every 30 – 60 min from about 06:30 to 16:00.
  • Sleeper bus: About 6 – 7 hrs and $11 – $15. Overnight buses arrive around 04:30 – 05:00.
  • Train to Lao Cai: About 8 – 9 hrs and $9 – $29, then a 1-hour transfer to Sapa (bus about 30,000 VND, taxi about 400,000 VND).
  • Booking tip: Book through a reputable platform; hotel desks add a $2 – $4 markup.
Step 3: Explore on Foot Steep paths, fog and mud; wear grip shoes

Sapa town is walkable. Villages are best reached on foot with a guide, or by short taxi rides.

  • Walking treks: Use a local guide and wear shoes with good grip.
  • Taxi: Useful for the cable car and outlying villages.
  • Motorbike: Steep, foggy roads. Only for experienced riders.
  • Fog and cold: Bring layers; fog reduces views and makes paths slippery.
