Cao Bang Overview

Cao Bang is a quiet border province of limestone peaks, rice terraces and Vietnam’s best-known transborder waterfall. It suits road-trippers, photographers and travelers who prefer few crowds.

Highlights of Cao Bang:

  • Ban Gioc Waterfall: About 85 – 100km from Cao Bang City, 2 – 3 hrs each way. Go early and agree a return price.
  • Nguom Ngao Cave: Near the waterfall. Combine both in one day.
  • Thang Hen and Phong Nam: Lakes and valleys on rough side roads. A guide or local driver helps.
  • Easy rider tours: Riders take you as a passenger for about $20 – $32 per day. Book through your homestay.

Best Time to Visit: Sep – Nov brings golden rice terraces, buckwheat flowers from about October and a fuller waterfall than in the dry months. Jun – Aug has heavy rain and landslide risk; Dec – Feb is cold and misty.

Noi Bai Airport is about 35km north of central Hanoi. Off-peak the drive takes about 40 min; at rush hour allow up to 1.5 hrs. There is no metro to the airport.

  • Best option: GrabCar or Xanh SM: fixed in-app fares of about 200,000 – 350,000 VND ($8 – $14) to the Old Quarter. A metered Mai Linh taxi costs about 300,000 – 400,000 VND ($12 – $16).
  • Bus: Express bus 86 costs about 45,000 VND ($1.80) and takes 45 – 60 min to the Hanoi Railway Station area. Bus 7 costs about 8,000 VND but takes 60 – 90 min.
  • Scam tip: Use the app or a branded metered taxi. Avoid unbranded cars and touts, and keep your address saved in Vietnamese.
Step 2: Bus to Cao Bang Limousine vans and sleeper buses from Hanoi

The limousine van is the best balance of comfort and speed. The road is winding, so add at least an hour to any estimate.

  • Limousine van: About 6 – 7 hrs and roughly $14 – $24. Daytime departures are available.
  • Sleeper bus: About 7 – 9 hrs and $10 – $14. Overnight buses leave around 20:00 – 21:15 and arrive around 04:00 – 05:45.
  • Private car: About 5 – 6 hrs and roughly $100 – $140 per car.
  • Booking tip: Book online and confirm the drop-off point in Cao Bang.
Step 3: Explore by Scooter Paved but narrow mountain roads

Cao Bang is spread out, and public transport is limited. Grab is not reliable here.

  • Scooter: Rentals cost about $6 – $14 per day. You need an International Driving Permit to rent legally.
  • Easy rider: About $20 – $32 per day with a local driver.
  • Taxi to Ban Gioc: About $24 – $32 one way; agree the return price first.
  • Road risk: Winding roads have no street lights and fog is common. Do not ride after dark.
