Overview

La Pan Tan is one of the best-known terrace areas in Mu Cang Chai, with steep fields climbing the hills in curved steps. Hmong villages sit between the paddies, and the view changes with the season from silver water to green rice to gold at harvest.

The valley is quiet apart from the road, and many visitors stay one night in a homestay to see the fields at sunrise. A short walk from the road leads to viewpoints over the full valley.

Highlights

  • See golden terraces at harvest
  • Walk through Hmong villages
  • Photograph the fields at sunrise

FAQs

When are the terraces golden?

Usually mid-September to early October. The exact time depends on the weather each year.

Is it good in other seasons?

Yes. May and June have water-filled terraces that reflect the sky, and winter has quiet misty views.

Do I need to stay overnight?

It helps. A night in the valley gives you sunrise and sunset light.
