Three days is the sweet spot for Hanoi. It is enough to see the Old Quarter, the main sights and the food scene without rushing, and it leaves room for one slow coffee by the lake.
Is Hanoi worth visiting?
Yes. Hanoi is Vietnam’s capital and its cultural heart. You get narrow trading streets, French colonial buildings, old temples and some of the best street food in the country, all within a few kilometres.
It is busy and loud, and the traffic takes a day to get used to. Most visitors say that is part of the charm.
How many days do you need in Hanoi?
Two days covers the highlights if you move fast. Three days is more relaxed and lets you add a museum or a cooking class. Add a fourth and fifth day only if you plan day trips, for example to Ninh Binh.
What are the best things to do in Hanoi?
- Old Quarter: Walk the 36 old streets, each once named after the trade sold there. Go early, before the motorbikes fill the lanes.
- Hoan Kiem Lake: A calm loop of about 2 km in the city centre. The lake is busiest at dawn and in the evening, when locals exercise and chat.
- Temple of Literature: Founded in 1070, it is one of Vietnam’s oldest centres of learning. Cover your shoulders and knees. Check the current ticket price and opening hours before you go.
- Hoa Lo Prison: A French-built prison that is now a museum. Allow about one hour.
- Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum area: The mausoleum closes for maintenance for several weeks each year, so check the dates first. The grounds, the stilt house and the One Pillar Pagoda are close together.
- Water puppet show: A traditional northern Vietnam art form. Shows are short, around 50 minutes, and good for a first evening.
What should you eat in Hanoi?
Start with pho for breakfast and bun cha (grilled pork with noodles) for lunch. Try egg coffee in the afternoon. It was created in Hanoi in the 1940s and tastes like a warm, light custard.
Look for stalls with many local customers and a short menu. Those are usually fresh and fairly priced.
When is the best time to visit Hanoi?
Autumn (around October to December) and spring (around March to April) are the most comfortable. Summer is hot and humid, and winter can feel cool and grey. For monthly details see our Hanoi travel guide.
How do you get around Hanoi?
The Old Quarter and the lake are easy on foot. For longer trips use a ride-hailing app such as Grab, which shows the price before you ride. From Noi Bai Airport, a taxi or Grab to the Old Quarter usually takes 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. Crossing the street is simple: walk slowly and steadily, and the motorbikes will go around you.
Where should you stay in Hanoi?
For a first visit, stay in or near the Old Quarter or around Hoan Kiem Lake. You can walk to most sights and food spots. If you want quieter streets and wider pavements, look at the French Quarter south of the lake.
