A former prison where thousands of prisoners were held during the war, now a free memorial and museum.
Phu Quoc Prison, also called Coconut Tree Prison, was built in the 1950s and used to hold political prisoners and soldiers during the war. At its peak, thousands of people were held in the camps.
Today it is a memorial and museum. Reconstructed cells and models show how prisoners lived and were punished, and the site is a sober contrast to the island’s beaches and resorts.
