Overview

Khe Sanh was the site of the 1968 siege. The Ta Con airfield and combat base lie on a plateau about 5 km from Khe Sanh town, near the Lao border. The site was made a national monument in 1986. It now has a small museum, bunkers and trenches, and aircraft and tanks on display, including C-130, C-119, UH-1 and CH-47 aircraft. A C-119 was brought from Bien Hoa airbase in early 2026.

It is the furthest of the DMZ sights from Hue and the coast, so it suits a full day or a private driver. Plan about 1 to 1.5 hours on site. The red earth and the hills around it help explain why the base was so hard to supply.

Highlights

  • See the aircraft and tanks on display
  • Walk through bunkers and trenches
  • Visit the small museum with maps and photographs
  • Look across the plateau toward the Lao border
